The focus of my research is to understand cell fate specification in the developing brain and in human neural progenitor cells using cell-based models of neuronal differentiation.
Malin Parmar. Malin Parmar heads a research group focused on developmental and regenerative neurobiology at Lund University in Sweden. The ultimate goal of her research is to develop cell therapy for Parkinson’s disease. At this year’s Hydra summer school I spoke to Malin about how she got started in stem cell research, what she’s working on at the moment, and her view of the prospects for treating Parkinson’s disease with stem cells. Tadeusz Wieloch: Laboratory for Experimental Brain Research Tomas Björklund: Molecular Neuromodulation Labs Malin Parmar, Lund University, Sweden Malin Parmar is a professor in cellular neuroscience at Lund University in Sweden and a New York Stem Cell Foundation – Robertson investigator. Her research has a strong translational focus. Thus, similar to the studies elucidating the role of the floor plate during development (Bonilla et al., 2008; Fasano et al., 2010; Kawasaki et al., 2000), refined understanding of developmental biology, this time achieved by the high resolution of cell diversity achieved via single cell sequencing, was essential for precise control of stem cell differentiation in vitro (Kee et al., 2017 Neural stem and progenitor cells hold the promise to be used in cell-based therapies to treat both acute and degenerative neurological diseases. To date, most research has been focused on the use of in vitro propagated stem cells used as a… However, it remains a challenge for researchers to control stem cells accurately in the lab in order to achieve successful and functional stem cell therapies for patients.
