Gustaf Aulén föddes i ett prästhem i Ljungby församling 1879. Som ung kom han till Uppsala för universitetsstudier, och blev så småningom professor vid den teologiska fakulteten i Lund, där han tillsammans med bland annat Anders Nygren kom att bilda skola. Då hade han gift sig med Kristine Bjørnstad från Norge.
